The starting point will be at Rochester & Chestnut, at the SE corner of the park.

A lot of paint is on the roads to mark the route. Sorry, but the city won’t allow us to post signs. The historic brewery sites are marked with numbers that correspond with your map, cue sheet and tour guide. History docents will be happy to fill you in on stories of family dynasties, the connection of beer with baseball, gangsters and other legends of brewing history. The docents will be at Local Pig at Montgall & Guinotte-one block from Knuckleheads, River Market Cyclery at 3rd & Oak, 9th & State Line and the Lemp Castle at 20th & McGee.

Roving SAGs will be available to help you if you have problems.

Enjoy your ride, the fascinating KC brewing history and check out the 7 unique rest stops that will have water and snacks waiting for you!

After the ride, Boulevard, Tallgrass and Red Bull will provide beverages! Soft drinks will also be available for purchase at Knuckleheads. Lunch will be served from 11:30 so take your time! Use your lunch ticket at any of 4 purveyors of delicious food and don’t forget the SPIN! gelato. Massage Amani will be available to sooth your tired muscles. At 12:30, BikeWeek announcements start. Extra meal and beer tickets, t-shirts, tankards and BikeWalkKC memberships will be available for purchase. Then icing on the cake, at 1:00 live music begins and its time to party!

Remember to thank your volunteers, tip your bartenders and Tell Frank and Mary “thank you” for hosting us at this event — this great ride could not happen without them!

The Big Rip Brewing Company is celebrating their grand opening on Sunday. They will be open at dawn to welcome the Tour de Brew riders as the first rest stop. There you can enjoy delicious snacks, snap a photo in the outdoor photo booth AND sample of one of their beers. They are open until the beer runs out or 7pm. Stop by after the ride and enjoy a flight or two. Visit BigRipBrewing.com for more details. Big Rip gives 10% of their online sales to local nonprofits (like BikeWalkKC) so shop local and support Big Rip.

Have a taste of best they have to offer, get some treats then you can enjoy their beer after the ride at the party at Knuckleheads.

West-mccoy-wAfter pedaling up the Main Street hill you’re gonna need some treats and a taste! So cruise into Westport to McCoy’s Public House, named after John McCoy, the founder of Westport. Located on the Santa Fe Trail, Westport has been welcoming guests for more than 150 years. That kind of hospitality got it voted one of the favorite rest stops last year!

Family Bicycles WornallTally-ho! On to the best bike shop in Waldo, Family Bicycles where you can see the latest in cycling gear and get refreshments. From here the 33-milers will return to Knuckleheads and the 63-milers will continue south through Swope Park and Blue River Road.

These are our fabulous rest stops for the 15– and 33-mile tours. The next post will take you to the depths of Martin City and back for more details about the 63-mile tour and blow-out party to celebrate Bike Week!

Last Call for Early Registration!

Time is running out for early registration for Tour de Brew Kansas City, this May 19!

Thank you to all who have registered and shown your support for BikeWalkKC! Tickets for the event are only $40 until midnight March 31. Tour de Brew KC is a bicycle tour of the city’s zany, lurid and oft-forgotten brewing history. It’s the only event of its kind in the region and isn’t to be missed!
Register here!

Four Routes
The shorter 15– and 18-mile rides show you the heart of Kansas City’s historic beer institutions. You’ll have almost two-dozen stops, including the site of Electric Park in the Industrial Northeast where beverages from the adjacent Heim Brewery were pumped fresh into the park’s beer garden, and the erstwhile “wettest block in the world” where 23 of 24 establishments were liquor-related. Of course, it’s not all in the past: you’ll see—no, taste, the city’s beer legacy living on at Boulevard Brewing Co. and smaller brewers.

More hardened riders can choose the 33– or 63-mile ride. Both routes make the same stops as the shorter rides but break away to the south. The 33-mile riders visit Westport and loop around Waldo.

The 66-mile route drops in on one of KC’s best pubs in Martin City before meandering through lovely Leawood to rejoin the shorter routes.

Historic Stops
Though the tour is self-guided, docents will be at many stops to tell the story of Kansas City’s colorful beer culture, recounting the rise and fall of big brews, the mob’s influence on the lucrative business, and the story of “near-beer” and other Prohibition-dodging techniques. You’ll see mansions built by beer barons, learn how Kansas City was a major outpost for Milwaukee and St. Louis brews, and hear about the connection between KC baseball and beer. Plus, you’ll learn about the role some of the city’s most iconic buildings played in the production and distribution of beer. It’s an afternoon of tall tales and intrigue—together with bicycles and beer.

Of course, KC beer isn’t all in the past. The products of our local breweries are on tap at many stops. Sample Boulevard’s latest varieties and try a taste from other regional producers, including new Big Rip Brewing and Manhattan’s Tallgrass Brewing Co.

All proceeds from Tour de Brew KC support BikeWalkKC’s educational programs, legislative efforts, and other initiatives, helping to improve conditions for bicycling and walking in the area.

Last day for early registration is March 31!

Hurry to get the best rates for Tour de Brew KC! Don’t miss out on the best tour ever on Sunday, May 19! Returning this year are Boulevard, Family Bicycles, McCoy’s, SPIN! Pizza, Bike Source and Martin City Brewing. NEW this year is Tallgrass Brewing Company from the Little Apple, Manhattan KS!

Tour de Brew KC benefits BikeWalkKC and you by keeping the goodness in the community! We keep it local by supporting small business and making our region more vibrant. BikeWalkKC brought us KC B-Cycle, AHEAD of many other cities! They work to get bike lanes, crosswalks and other ways to make it easier and better to bike and walk in the metro area.

See our sponsors and give them some love.
