Parking

Knuckleheads is in a cool urban area so parking there has an urban flavor. There are 4 parking lots just west of Knuckleheads but we expect them to quickly fill up. This is how to find parking.

At the Event

Tour de Brew KC site is Heim Park, the site of the first Electric Park, and Knuckleheads! When you get to the park, put your bike in the bike parking area, then reg­is­ter, pick up your packet, have some coffee and hang out with your friends!

The start­ing point will be at Rochester & Chestnut, at the SE corner of the park.

A lot of paint is on the roads to mark the route. Sorry, but the city won’t allow us to post signs. The his­toric brewery sites are marked with numbers that cor­re­spond with your map, cue sheet and tour guide. History docents will be happy to fill you in on stories of family dynas­ties, the con­nec­tion of beer with base­ball, gang­sters and other legends of brewing history. The docents will be at Local Pig at Montgall & Guinotte-one block from Knuckleheads, River Market Cyclery at 3rd & Oak, 9th & State Line and the Lemp Castle at 20th & McGee.

Roving SAGs will be avail­able to help you if you have problems.

Enjoy your ride, the fas­ci­nat­ing KC brewing history and check out the 7 unique rest stops that will have water and snacks waiting for you!

After the ride, Boulevard, Tallgrass and Red Bull will provide bev­er­ages! Soft drinks will also be avail­able for pur­chase at Knuckleheads. Lunch will be served from 11:30 so take your time! Use your lunch ticket at any of 4 pur­vey­ors of deli­cious food and don’t forget the SPIN! gelato. Massage Amani will be avail­able to sooth your tired muscles. At 12:30, BikeWeek announce­ments start. Extra meal and beer tickets, t-shirts, tankards and BikeWalkKC mem­ber­ships will be avail­able for pur­chase. Then icing on the cake, at 1:00 live music begins and its time to party!

The Big Rip Brewing Company is cel­e­brat­ing their grand opening on Sunday. They will be open at dawn to welcome the Tour de Brew riders as the first rest stop. There you can enjoy deli­cious snacks, snap a photo in the outdoor photo booth AND sample of one of their beers. They are open until the beer runs out or 7pm. Once you leave the friendly folks at Family Bicycles, you will cruise through beau­ti­ful Swope park and Blue River Rd towards the Trailside Center/Whole Foods Market rest stop at 99^th and Holmes. Just off the Indian Creek Trail, vol­un­teers will have tasty, health­ful treats and invite you to step into the Center that com­mem­o­rates the Santa Fe, California and Oregon trails.

Onward! Our next stop is the best pub in MC, Martin City Brewing
Co., home of toasted PB&Js. This year, our friends at Tallgrass Brewing Co. will offer tastes of their latest deli­cious brew. More Tallgrass beer will be avail­able at the party at Knucklehead’s.

After a sweet ride through Leawood, you will be greeted again at Family bicy­cles to make sure your tank is full for the ride back to Knuckleheads.

We’ve got some won­der­ful people eager to see you on Tour de Brew KC!

Our first stop will be at the newest brewery in KC, The Big Rip! It’s just a short trip over the Heart of America Bridge and you will be able to sample their first offer­ings right out of the tank! Big Rip is also donat­ing 10% of revenue to one of our favorite non-profits—BikeWalkKC! Learn more about them here!

After a short tour of old brewery sites in the west bottoms and SW Boulevard, you will be at the one-and-only Boulevard Brewing Company, the largest spe­cialty brewer in the Midwest! Have a taste of best they have to offer, get some treats then you can enjoy their beer after the ride at the party at Knuckleheads.

After ped­al­ing up the Main Street hill you’re gonna need some treats and a taste! So cruise into Westport to McCoy’s Public House, named after John McCoy, the founder of Westport. Located on the Santa Fe Trail, Westport has been wel­com­ing guests for more than 150 years. That kind of hos­pi­tal­ity got it voted one of the favorite rest stops last year!

Tally-ho! On to the best bike shop in Waldo, Family Bicycles where you can see the latest in cycling gear and get refresh­ments. From here the 33-milers will return to Knuckleheads and the 63-milers will con­tinue south through Swope Park and Blue River Road.

Time is running out for early reg­is­tra­tion for Tour de Brew Kansas City, this May 19!

Tour de Brew KC is a bicycle tour of the city’s zany, lurid and oft-forgotten brewing history. It’s the only event of its kind in the region and isn’t to be missed!

Four Routes
The shorter 15– and 18-mile rides show you the heart of Kansas City’s his­toric beer insti­tu­tions. You’ll have almost two-dozen stops, includ­ing the site of Electric Park in the Industrial Northeast where bev­er­ages from the adja­cent Heim Brewery were pumped fresh into the park’s beer garden, and the erst­while “wettest block in the world” where 23 of 24 estab­lish­ments were liquor-related. Of course, it’s not all in the past: you’ll see—no, taste, the city’s beer legacy living on at Boulevard Brewing Co. and smaller brewers.

More hard­ened riders can choose the 33– or 63-mile ride. Both routes make the same stops as the shorter rides but break away to the south. The 33-mile riders visit Westport and loop around Waldo.

The 66-mile route drops in on one of KC’s best pubs in Martin City before mean­der­ing through lovely Leawood to rejoin the shorter routes.

Historic Stops
Though the tour is self-guided, docents will be at many stops to tell the story of Kansas City’s col­or­ful beer culture, recount­ing the rise and fall of big brews, the mob’s influ­ence on the lucra­tive busi­ness, and the story of “near-beer” and other Prohibition-dodging tech­niques. You’ll see man­sions built by beer barons, learn how Kansas City was a major outpost for Milwaukee and St. Louis brews, and hear about the con­nec­tion between KC base­ball and beer. Plus, you’ll learn about the role some of the city’s most iconic build­ings played in the pro­duc­tion and dis­tri­b­u­tion of beer. It’s an after­noon of tall tales and intrigue—together with bicy­cles and beer.

Of course, KC beer isn’t all in the past. The prod­ucts of our local brew­eries are on tap at many stops. Sample Boulevard’s latest vari­eties and try a taste from other regional pro­duc­ers, includ­ing new Big Rip Brewing and Manhattan’s Tallgrass Brewing Co.

All pro­ceeds from Tour de Brew KC support BikeWalkKC’s edu­ca­tional pro­grams, leg­isla­tive efforts, and other ini­tia­tives, helping to improve con­di­tions for bicy­cling and walking in the area.
